Riding on the Beach in Iceland

Explore the stunning coastlines and rugged terrains of Iceland from the back of the Icelandic horse. You can choose between riding on the golden sands of Löngufjörur Beach in Snæfellsnes or the Black Sand Beaches of the South. Each of our beach riding tours is designed for intermediate to advanced riders.

 

Here is everything you need to know about our unique beach rides.

1. Snæfellsnes Beach Ride

 

Tour Duration: 2 nights, 2 riding days (with an optional additional day for whale watching)

Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced

Departures: June 2024

 

Set on the breathtaking Löngufjörur Beach, a gem on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, this ride offers sweeping views of the iconic Snæfellsjökull Glacier. Known as the setting for Jules Verne’s “Journey to the Center of the Earth,” this area boasts expansive, wide-golden sands that merge seamlessly with the horizon, offering riders a true sense of freedom.

 

Led by the esteemed local legend Siggi, whose 40 years of experience make him a fount of knowledge on the area and horses. Participants will enjoy the tölt across the golden beaches of Löngufjörur. Look out for the majestic White Tailed Eagle and take the opportunity to delve into the local marine life with an optional whale watching tour starting from Ólafsvik. This is the only beach riding tour that you ride with a herd of horses.

2. Black Sand Beach Ride

 

Tour Duration: 2 nights, 2 riding days

Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced

Departures: May, June, August 2024

 

The Black Sand Beach Ride offers an adventurous trek across the stark black sands that contrast dramatically with the white surf of the waves. Starting from the southern coast near Grímsstaðir, riders will be accompanied by passionate guides from Bakkakot Farm, known for their expertise in handling the unique Icelandic horse breed.

 

As you tölt along the coastline, you will enjoy the views of the Westman Islands and the towering glacier Eyjafjallajökull. This tour not only highlights the distinct nature of Icelandic beaches but also brings you closer to the ancient volcanic history that shapes this mystical land.

3. Black Beach and Lava Tour

 

Tour Duration: 3 nights, 4 riding days

Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced

Departures: May, June, August 2024 (additional departures upon request)

 

Explore the Dynamic Landscapes of Iceland. This extensive tour takes riders through moss-covered lava fields and moon like landscapes of the Reykjanes peninsula to the dramatic southern coastlines. The journey includes a ride around the sacred Helgafell, or ‘Holy Mountain,’ a site of immense cultural and historical significance.

 

Along the way, we pause at several caves, offering views as distant as Snæfellsnes on clear days. Our shuttle will then transport you south to the Grimstadir farm. There we saddle up and experience the ocean breeze as you ride the Icelandic horse across the black sand beaches of Iceland. Our Bakkakot Farm guides, experts in Icelandic horses, will ensure a memorable ride along this pristine black coastline. This riding journey offers an unforgettable glimpse of the natural beauty of Iceland.
