Ride to Landsmót

Join us for a spectacular horseback riding adventure in Iceland, leading from the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, through Borgarfjörður past the historical parliament Þingvellir, to the renowned Landsmót, the National Icelandic Horse Competition, which is a significant event in Iceland, showcasing the unique qualities of the Icelandic horse.

We have designed this tour with the aim to fit it snugly into the calendar of advanced riders who are coming to Iceland in the summer 2024 to spend a few unforgettable days on horseback, as well as, optionally, to attend the 2 final days of the National Icelandic Horse Competition Landsmót, which will be held from 1st to 7th July in Reykjavík. The A-finals are scheduled for 7th July in the afternoon. The Landsmót event itself is not included in the tour, but it can be a fascinating option of prolonging one’s adventurous visit in Iceland.

This journey takes riders through scenic farmlands, lush grasslands, and across rocky terrains and offers spectacular views of Mt. Hafnarfjall and glimpses of the glacier Eiriksjokull while crossing the Hvítá River. The tour continues with navigation of the Hestháls pass and a ride along Lake Skorradalsvatn.  Then we head deep into the Western Highlands, exploring the ancient lava fields of the Skjaldbreidur volcano.

The landscape shifts dramatically as we enter Skógarhólar in Þingvellir National Park, known as the birthplace of the Icelandic Parliament, Alþingi, established in 930 AD. There we transition from vast lunar-like expanses to lush greenery dominated by birch trees. This part of the tour is a showcase of the diverse natural beauty of Iceland.  This scenic approach to Reykjavik provides a fitting and spectacular conclusion to the journey, visiting Hvammsvík geothermal pools, aligning perfectly with the celebration of the Landsmot event

    Reykjavík -Stóri Kálfalækur

The pick up is scheduled for approximately 16:40 in Reykjavik. From there, we will drive to the farm Kálfalækur, a journey that takes about 1.5 hours. Upon arrival, we will settle in and take the opportunity to acquaint ourselves with one another over dinner.

    1.7

Stóri Kálfalækur – Grímsstaðir (25 km)

We start our ride in the north of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, a realm of mystique and natural wonder. The journey takes riders through scenic farmlands, lush grasslands, and across rocky terrains at the base of Grímstaðamúli mountain range. One of the stops for changing horses is at a traditional sheep round-up paddock, adding an authentic touch to the experience.

    2.7

    Grímsstaðir – Heggsstaðir (27 km)
On our second day we start to ride alongside the mountain ridge and then turn South, this route offers spectacular views of Mt. Hafnarfjall and possible glimpses of the glacier Eiriksjokull while crossing the Hvítá River. We leave the horses at a farm paddock and drive back to Stóri Kálfalækur where we will spend the night.

    3.7

     Heggstaðir – Fitjar (28 km)

After a last breakfast at Stóri-Kálfalækur we drive to our horses at Heggstaðir and get ready for a day entering the mountains. The tour continues with navigation of the Hestháls pass and a ride along Lake Skorradalsvatn that is one of the larger lakes in Iceland, extending about 15 kilometers in length. The lake is known for its relatively warm water, which is a bit unusual for Icelandic lakes. This is due to geothermal activity in the area.

    4.7

     Fitjar – Skógarhólar (37 km)

Today will lead us deep into the Western Highlands, exploring the 9000 year old lava fields of the Skjaldbreidur volcano. The journey offers spectacular views of the Langjökull and Þórisjökull glaciers and the unique Ok: the mountain who lost his status as a glacier in 2019. The landscape changes from moon-like vastness to the bright green of the birch trees once we arrive in Skogarholar in the Thingvellir National Park.

    5.7

    Skógarholar – Helgadalur (32 km)

The landscape shifts dramatically as we ride by Þingvellir National Park, known as the birthplace of the Icelandic Parliament, Alþingi, established in 930 AD. We continue our ride up on the high plain of Mosfellsheiði, through lava fields and past lakes with the view of the ocean to the front, Esja mountain range to the right and Hengill volcano to the left. This part of the tour is a showcase of the diverse natural beauty of Iceland. The journey culminates with a visit to Hvammsvík, a hidden gem known for  thermal hot springs, which provide a natural spa experience. ABOUT Landsmót Hestamanna

The biannual tournament has been the largest outdoor sporting event in the country ever since its first edition at Þingvellir in 1950. An attendance record was set in 2008, with nearly 14,000 guests. It holds significant importance in the Icelandic horse community. It serves as a national platform for showcasing the unique qualities of the Icelandic horse breed. The week-long festival features a variety of attractions, such as:

Breeding Shows: These events are crucial for maintaining and improving the breed standard. They focus on evaluating the conformation, movements, and overall qualities of Icelandic horses.

Riding Competitions: The most talented riders showcase their skills in different disciplines, including tölt and flying pace. The Icelandic horse's ability to perform unique gaits is a highlight of these events. Noteworthily, there is no racing as betting is banned in Iceland.

Festivities and Cultural Events: Cultural performances, music, and social gatherings provide a platform for people to come together, share their passion for the Icelandic horse, and  celebrate Icelandic culture and traditions.

Please, check the official Landsmót website for the most up-to-date information on the event, including dates, venues, and competition categories: https://www.landsmot.is/en
