Experience the ascending highland and the three mighty glaciers, Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull and Tindafjallajökull. We will ride along as we can view Þórsmörk Nature Reserve and enjoy our mounts with a herd of horses.  We ride trails that take us around smaller mountains and hills. Still embraced by the brisk, rugged highland we continue on excellent trails through this vibrant wonderland. We ride by the fountains of a river as we descend towards deserted farm Foss, looking over to Iceland’s most active volcano Hekla; that inhabitants believed were the doors to Hell.

Day-by-Day Itinerary:

Day 1
Pick-up in the afternoon in Reykjavík and a bus transfer to our farm Efri-Úlfsstaðir, where we get our rooms and dinner. After dinner we have a tour meeting with the guide and the tour manager, to go over things before the tour that goes around the Tindfjallajökull Glacier (Peak Mountains Glacier). An early night for most of us after a strenuous travel day is likely to be the choice for most riders.

Accommodation: Efri-Ulfsstadir. With shower.

Day 2
After breakfast and making lunch packs we greet the horses. We will ride the first leg without the loose horses, just to allow riders to get their balance and confidence and get acquainted to their horses. We ride on the banks of Affall river, nice tölt paths along mother nature’s lifeline. After changing horses, the views hit us with all their glory; glaciers and the highland mountains as well as lower grown mountains and hills in the countryside. History lurks nearly every step of the way we ride and we get to see the mighty glacier-fed river Markarfljót for the first time, but not the last. We drive back to our farm Efri-Úlfsstadir.

Accommodation: Efri-Ulfsstadir. With shower.
Riding: 35 km, 6-7 hours

Day 3
Today we start ascending up to the highland. We are getting closer to the glaciers and ahead the mighty Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull catch our welcoming eyes. As we are riding around the Tindfjallajökull glacier, it will be on our left all tour. We make a stop at Mt. Þórólfsfell where we change horses. Overlooking Þórsmörk Nature Reserve and Markarfljót river we enjoy our mounts, driving the loose herd of horses. We stay the night by a peculiarly shaped Mt. Einhyrningur, in a cabin called Bólstaður. Someone might feel the urge to climb the mountain, just because it is there.

Accommodation: Bólstadur. Without shower.
Riding: 25 km, 5-6 hours

Day 4
From here we ride the Mt. Unicorn’s rather steep slopes, around it and up to the desert-like plateau. Into the mountainous highland, we plunge. We ride paths that take us around smaller mountains and hills. We change horses at Krókur cabin, by Hvítmaga river. We pass Skuggahlíðar (Shadow hills) and Grasleysufjöll (Mountains without grass) on our way to our destination, Hungurfit cabin deep in the highland world that moves our hearts, and dares us to take in the troll-like atmosphere, and whispers its offer to become one with it; join it completely.

Accommodation: Hungurfit. With shower.
Riding: 25 km 5-6 hours

Day 5
Still embraced by the brisk, ruffled highland we continue on good paths through the wonderland. Mt. Stóra-Grænafjall (Big Green Mountain) catches the eye and we wonder how it was created. Mt. Hafrafell (Goatbuck Mountain) pretends it doesn’t see us as we float through the landscape on our surefooted mounts.  We ride by the fountains of river Eystri-Rangá as we descend towards deserted farm Foss, looking over to Iceland’s most active volcano Hekla; that inhabitants believed were the doors to Hell. Closer to us rises Mt. Þríhyrningur (Mt. Three Horns), which reminds us that the Sagas are all around us.

Accommodation: Foss Cabin. With shower.
Riding: 25 km 5-6 hours

Day 6
Today we feel the horses’ anticipation; they know they are getting closer to home descending from the highlands. We ride between two mountains into valley Vatnsdalur, getting closer to civilization by each smooth step our horses take. We change horses at the local sheep paddock at Ormskot farm. Down on the desert sands that volcanic floods have created decades and ages ago, we realize how vulnerable humans are when facing Mother Nature and its forces. Again we ride the perfect tölting paths on the banks of Affall river until we reach home. Horses get days off on the grassy fields, riders take a shower and sauna getting ready for the farewell dinner.

Accommodation: Efri-Ulfsstadir. With shower.
Riding: 35 km 6-7 hours

Day 7
After breakfast, we will head back to Reykjavík with a bus.
