Thingvellir Special


On this tour we take you around Lake Thingvallavatn, Iceland´s biggest lakeand important part of the Thingvellir National Park. Ride through geothermal areas, moss covered lava fields and on the shores of the lake.

    Shared rooms in comfortable setting Accommodation after the ride are to be arranged individually.



    Bus transfer from Reykjavík to the farm. or from Keflavik to the farm and back (pick up at the airport on 17.6. at 17:00 and drop off on 22.6. at 9:00)

    During the ride full board is provided. Our menu consists of a large breakfast and traditional Icelandic meals (fish or lamb). Vegetarian meals are available on request when booking. All riders make their own packed lunch from the breakfast table.

    Alcoholic beverages are not included in the tour price and are hard to get in the highlands. They can be bought at a reasonable price in the Duty Free Store at Keflavik Airport upon arrival.

    Rain wear, water bottle, saddle bag, riding helmet.

    Individual travel insurance is not included in the tour price. We encourage clients to obtain relevant travel insurance before visiting Iceland.

    Day 1 Reykjavík - Torfastaðir 

    Pick-up starts at 17:45 in Reykjavik or is at 17:00 at Keflavik airport)
    Bus transfer to Torfastaðir Guesthouse, where we settle in.

    Day 2 Torfastaðir - Nesjavellir

    After breakfast and lunch-pack making, we meet the horses and start the ride towards the great Lake of Þingvallavatn. We ascend up to a secluded old sheep paddock and then we ride towards farm Villingavatn, where we change horses. From here we ride with views to the mountains and volcanoes along the lake to Nesjavellir farm, where we see the big steam from a power plant in the bottom of the valley, towered by the ancient volcano Mt. Hengill. Bus back to Torfastaðir Guesthouse. 22 km

    Day 3 Nesjavellir - Kárastaðir
    From Nesjavellir we ride up a rather steep pass, Jórukleif, up to the heathland that provides us with soft mud paths, excellent for our tölting horses. We pass farm Heiðabær on our way to Kárastaðir farm, where we leave the horses and return to the guesthouse by bus. 20 km

    Day 4 Kárastaðir – Kringlumyri

    We will continue our ride towards Þingvellir, where the ancient Icelandic parliament Alþingi was founded in 930 AC. From Þingvellir we'll ride through the wood clad lava fields to the mountain hut Kringlumýri now heading east with the great lake and the majestic Hengill volcano to our right. To the left we have an even greater volcano, Skjaldbreiður, which spewed the lava field we are actually riding, so many years ago. Bus back to Torfastaðir Guesthouse. 22 km

    Day 5 Kringlumyri - Torfastaðir
    We continue our ride in the heathland paths called Drift. We descend ot lake Þingvallavatn, passing the river Sogið on a dam. Again we ride by farm Villingavatn, and up to the sheep paddock, still going until we return to Torfastadir. Farewell dinner at Torfastaðir farm. 27 km.

    Departure day
    Transfer to Reykjavik (or Keflavik) after breakfast.
