Other Gaits

Walk
The walk is a four-beat gait where there is at least two – three foots down at the same time. In the beginning of the riding tour, it is good to let the horse walk to warm up and as well as at the end to relax.

Trot
The trot is a two-beat gait whereas the two legs are on the ground at the same time. It is the easiest gait beside the walk and the horses prefer this gait when traveling on rough terrain. That is why it is crucial to train this gait as well as others.

Canter or Gallop
This gait is a three -beat gait. It is a desirable gait when the horse is lazy as well as to increase its willingness.  Because the horse can jump on either of his legs than it is important to train both because that is the key to the flying pace.

The flying pace
Is a two-beat lateral gait. This pace is only ridden on the short distance at a high speed. Not all Icelandic horses can perform this gait. Those who can are considered the best of the Icelandic horse breed.
