Day-by-Day Itinerary

Sunday: Arrival in Iceland - Keflavík Airport - Reykjavík
Transfer from Keflavík Airport to a hotel in Reykjavík. We will invite you to a Welcome Meeting including traditional Icelandic soup. Receive details of your tour and meet your fellow riders.

Monday: Reykjavík – Egilsstaðir – Sturluflöt – Hamarsdalur – Eyjólfsstaðir
Flight to Egilsstaðir town in the morning and a drive to Sturluflöt Farm where we meet horses and staff. After a short introduction to the Icelandic horse and its special gait we start our ride. We ride up on the barren heath south of Hornbrynja ridge and see Thrándarjökull glacier in a distance. Our ride ends in Hamardalur valley, a long and narrow valley with steep cliffs, before we continue to Eyjólfsstaðir Farm where we spend this night and the next. (40 km)

Tuesday: Eyjólfsstaðir – Starmýri – Eyjólfsstaðir
We ride halfway around Mt. Krákhamarsfjall and past Geithellnadalur valley. At Mt. Breiðafjall we turn towards the sea and into Álftafjördur fjord, the “fjord of swans”. Enjoy the wonderful view over islands and the lively birdlife. We pass Hofsá and Hofsdalur valley while riding along the shore. Waves from the Atlantic Ocean burst dramatically on small islands and rocks on the beach. Our horses spend the night at Starmýri Farm and we return to Eyjólfsstaðir Farm for another night. (40 km)

Wednesday: Starmýri – Lónsheiði – Stafafell í Lóni
We start this day heading across the Lónsheiði heath and continue by taking a loop around Reyðartindur, riding through a narrow valley. We head for Stafafell, nestled between the rainbow-hued mountains of Lón and Lónssandur, in the delta of river Jökulsá í Lóni. The mountains of Stafafell are known for their rhyolite colours and rich contrasts of nature. We spend the following three nights in Stafafell. (35 km)

Thursday: Stafafell í Lóni – Eskifell – Stafafell í Lóni
We head inland towards Mt Eskifell, passing the beautiful cliff Díma, riding along the river banks of the glacier river and passing the waters in a place where it spreads out on wide black sands. The horses really show there best on this amazing ground we ride on. Return to Stafafell where we spend another night. (30 km)

Friday: Stafafell í Lóni – Hraunkot – Stafafell – Efri Fjörður – Stafafell í Lóni
This day starts with a fine ride on the beautiful beach and we leave the herd behind at Stafafell. After we have finished our circle we return to the herd, have lunch and continue to Efri-Fjörður Farm. During our ride we have a great view of the ocean and Mt. Vestrahorn ahead of us. Our horses stay behind at Efri Fjörður and we return to Stafafell for our last night there. (32 km)

Saturday: Efri Fjörður – Endalausi dalur – Hornafjördur
We meet the horses again at Efri Fjörður and ride into Endalausi dalur, the „endless valley“, towards Laxárdalur valley, south of Mt. Ketillaugar. The impressive mountain range close to mighty Vatnajökull glacier opens up to us when we cross the pass Almannaskarð. Sand bars and glacial rivers traverse this area with many shifting lagoons and sand reefs being formed. Our ride ends at Hoffell Farm where our horses stay behind and we can take a dip in the natural hot pots before we celebrate the sucessful end of our ride. (38 km)

Sunday: Höfn í Hornafirði – optional boat trip on a glacier lagoon – Reykjavík
Return back to Reykjavík on the scheduled bus, leaving Höfn in Hornafjördur at 10:00 in the morning. We stop at the glacier lagoon Jökulsárlón and drive along the scenic South coast on our way back to Reykjavík. We see Seljalandsfoss and Skógarfoss waterfalls, as well as the glacier covered volcano Eyjafjallajökull. Approx. arrival in Reykjavík at 19:00. Overnight stay at a hotel in Reykjavík.

Optional (available at an extra charge): Boat trip on Jökulsárlón lagoon
Enjoy the white ice field of Vatnajökull glacier up-close. We board a boat that will take us on a scenic sail amongst the icebergs. A guide explains the specifics of the glacier and lagoon. Total duration, approx. 30 - 40 minutes, price per person ISK 3.500.
